“Every good gift and every perfect gift, comes from above, comes from the Father of all lights. In Him there is no change or shadow because of the exchange."
The biggest human error does not always lie in the final action, but can be from the wrong starting point. Humans tend to start from self-capacity such as reason, experience, strategy, even spirituality, then hope that God will bless the process. In fact, the Bible consistently shows that the true beginning never starts from the bottom up, but goes down from the top into the human life. When initially wrong, even the result that looks "good" still loses its divine weight.
James 1:16-18 introduces a theological concept that is often overlooked: God is not only the Blessor, but also the Determiner of the origin of goodness itself. This verse is not discussing the result, but the source. James emphasised that everything that is good and perfect "comes from above," meaning that true goodness is not born from the natural process of man, but from the initiative of God. This is important, because something can look morally good, but it is not necessarily divinely true if it is not sourced from God.
If the beginning does not come from above, humans will make God just a later validator, not the original source. Many ministries, life decisions, even spiritual practises lose their transformative power. We often start with an idea, then pray for God to agree to start with a plan, then ask God to secure; start with ambition, then ask God to bless. Theologically, this is a reversal of the divine order. The Bible actually teaches that God's will precedes human will, and human response is obedience, not negotiation.
All the right beginnings starting from the top is the principle that determines the direction of life. The beginning from above produces tranquillity, because it does not depend on human stability. The beginning from above gives birth to perseverance, because it relies on God's loyalty. The beginning from above also brings courage, because the one who starts is the one who finishes. Based on this, let's reflect on each of our steps: is this starting from God, or just our own personal desire?
