Bible Reading : Psalm 128:1-6
Reflection Verse : Psalm 128:1

"Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, who lives according to the way He has shown!"

INTRODUCTION

Psalm 128 is a pilgrimage song that is believed to have been written in the post-expulsion period, when the Israelites returned from Babylon and began to rebuild the Temple and their family life. In that context, family becomes the foundation of the nation's revival. As emphasised in this sermon, A true family will produce a true nation. The Word of God through Psalm 128 emphasises two true family models so that the GBI Mawar Saron congregation lives abundantly.

TWO CORRECT FAMILY MODELS SO THAT THE GBI MAWAR SARON CONGREGATION LIVES ABUNDANCE

  1. A True Family Has the Foundation of God's Word

Psalm 128 opens with the sentence, "Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord." The first emphasis is not on the wife or child, but on the head of the family. In the Bible order, men (husband and father) are the key to blessings in the household. Not in the context of gender superiority, but in the context of spiritual responsibility.

  1. The Right Head of Family

Psalm 128:1 "Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who lives according to the way He has shown! "

The word “fear of God” (Yir’at Adonai) not just fear, but deep respect, obedience to the word, and awareness of God's presence in every aspect of life. The true head of the family is a man who lives in the realisation that God is always present, whether in the office, in business decisions, in the use of money, in socialising, even in the mind. When the husband lives in the fear of God, he becomes a source of blessing for the whole family.

As for the application for the congregation, among others:

  1. Father becomes a priest in the house. Father is called to lead prayer, read the word, and be a role model of faith. Without God's word, there is no strong foundation to guide the family. Life experience alone is not enough; it is God's wisdom that unites knowledge and experience.
  2. Mother becomes the guardian of the spiritual atmosphere. If the husband is a priest, then the wife is a helper who sustains the spiritual service in the house. The wife maintains the atmosphere of faith, supports the husband's spiritual vision, and does not destroy the family's spiritual spirit.
  3. Children see examples, not just hear advice. Children learn not only from words, but from the lives of their parents. When fathers and mothers live in the fear of God, children will absorb that value naturally.
  1. Husband who works properly

Psalm 128: 2 "When you eat the labour of your hands, be happy and be of your condition! "

The Torah emphasises that the head of the family who fears God will work correctly. He does not rely on cheating, manipulation, or shortcuts. He eats from his own tiredness. In God's early design, work and family are channels of blessing. But due to sin, both of them often become a source of pressure and conflict. Therefore, the key to recovery is to return to the principle of fearing God in working.

As for the application for the congregation, among others:

  1. Husband works by hoping in God. He realises that God is the source of blessings, not just salary or position.
  2. Husband works by relying on the ability given by God. He develops talent seriously, not lazy.
  3. Husband does not work with a desperate or directionless attitude. He knows that his work is a calling, not just a routine.

The right family starts from the right head of the family. If the source is clean, the flow is also clean.

  1. The Right Family Has an Impact

A family that lives based on God's word does not stop at personal blessings. The impact extends to the house, to the House of God, to the nation.

  1. Impact in the House

Psalm 128:3 "Your wife will be like a lush vine in your house; your children will be like the buds of an olive tree around your table! "

In this verse appear two symbols that are very rich in meaning, namely the vine and the olive bud. The vine in the Bible symbolises fertility and joy, even becoming a symbol of Israel as God's chosen people. Wine is synonymous with abundance and celebration, so when a wife is described as a lush vine in the house, it means that she becomes a source of joy, warmth, and spiritual life for her family. A wife who lives in the fear of God brings an atmosphere full of love, peace, and faith growth in the household.

Meanwhile, children are depicted like olive buds around the table. Olive is known as a long-lived tree, strong, and resistant to various conditions. Olive buds symbolise endurance, continuity of life, and cross-generational heritage. In Jewish culture, boys are very important to inherit land, keep the family name, and pass on the faith to the next generation. The house is seen as a miniature of the Holy Temple, the dining table as an altar, and parents as the first Torah teachers for their children. It means, family is not just a place of residence, but the centre of character and faith that determines the future of the generation.

  1. Impactful in God's House

Psalm 128:5 "May the Lord bless you from Zion, so that you may see the happiness of Jerusalem for the rest of your life,"

Blessings do not stop at individuals or families alone, but flow from the centre of God's presence. In the structure of Psalm 128, blessings move progressively, starting from individuals who fear God, then impacting the family, then the House of God, extending to the nation, and finally to the next generation. The mention of "Sion" binds a personal blessing with the national worship centre, which is the place where God's people gather to worship. It means, a true family cannot be separated from life in the House of God. Worshipping at home and worshipping in the church must go hand in hand, because a family that lives close to God will be an active part in building the spiritual life of the congregation and ultimately make an impact on the nation.

  1. Impact on the Nation

Psalm 128:6 "and see the children of your children! Peace be upon Israel! "

This verse emphasises that the impact of a God-fearing family does not stop at the personal sphere, but extends to the national level. In the context of ancient Israel, the stability of the nation is strongly determined by the stability of the family. If the family is spiritually and morally strong, then the nation will also be strong. On the contrary, if the family collapses, the nation will also falter. The flow of blessings in the Bible is very clear, starting from God's blessing that descends to individuals, then flows to families, impacts society, and finally forms the nation. The rise of a nation does not start from the palace or the centre of power, but from the family dining room, where values, faith, and character are formed every day.

  1. Application for GBI Mawar Saron Church (Psalm 128:5-6)
  • Build a family prayer altar. Don't wait for problems to come then pray together. Make prayer as a culture.
  • Inherit faith, not just wealth. True wealth is not just an asset, but spiritual value.
  • Raise children by focussing on character formation. The world may judge achievements, but God judges character.

PENUTUPAN

Psalm 128 emphasises that a true family is a family that fears God. Blessings do not start from the outside, but from the inside, namely from the head of the family who lives in respect and obedience to God, from the wife who sustains and maintains the spiritual atmosphere in the house, and from the children who are raised in true faith. Such a family is a family that thinks across generations, not only thinking about today but also the future of descendants. From a healthy and God-fearing family a strong church will be born, and from a strong church a blessed nation will be formed and live in peace.
