Bible Reading : Romans 12:1–10

Verse of Reflection : Romans 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world, but be changed by the renewal of your mind, so that you can discern what is the will of God: what is good, what is pleasing to God and what is perfect."

Introduction

A true life is not just about how a person looks on the outside, but about how he is rooted inside and bears fruit on the outside. In Romans 12:1–10, the Apostle Paul affirms that the Christian life begins with the conscious decision to offer oneself to God, followed by a spiritual renewal, and manifested through the use of gifts to serve others. Without this foundation, the abundance promised by God will not be fully realised.

Therefore, an abundant life cannot be separated from a true life. A true life is a life that is changed from within by the Word and the Holy Spirit, then produces fruit in real action. The Word of God shows two directions of spiritual life: a life that only looks good on the outside, and a life that is truly true from the inside. Paul leads the congregation to choose a life model that is not only beautiful to look at, but also strong to sustain the storm and produce fruit. This is the model of life that every GBI Mawar Saron congregation must have in order to truly experience true abundance.

Two True Life Models to Live Abundantly

The Right Life Will Be Rooted Inside

A true life does not start from the outer appearance, but from the depths of the mind. Like a healthy tree, a true spiritual life will first grow strong roots before producing dense fruit.

The Right Life Grows from Self-Awareness (Romans 12:1)

Therefore, brothers, for the sake of God's mercy I advise you, that you offer your body as a living, holy and God-pleased offering: that is your true worship.” (Romans 12:1)

Apostle Paul advised the Roman congregation to offer the body as a living, holy, and pleasing offering to God. The word "presenting" (παραστῆσαι, parastēsai) is a form of order that emphasises a decision that must be taken immediately privately, not postponed, not inherited, and not represented.

In the situation of the Roman congregation that lived under the threat of persecution, Paul reminded that true worship is not just a religious ritual, but a life that is lived correctly every day. Self-awareness becomes the starting point of change: realising that this life belongs to God and must be fully dedicated to Him. The right life, therefore, is born from conscious spiritual decisions not because of environmental pressure, traditions, or social demands, but because of a personal response to God's mercy.

The Right Life Develops from Change of Mind (Romans 12:2)

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the will of God: what is good, which is pleasing to God, and what is perfect.” (Romans 12:2)

Paul continued with an equally strong command: "Do not be like this world, but be changed by the renewal of your mind." Here Paul emphasises that a true life cannot happen without a change in the way of thinking and feeling.

The term "become similar" (συσχηματίζεσθε, susxēmatizesthe) refers to the external pressure that shapes humans to follow the world's pattern. On the contrary, "change" (μεταμορφοῦσθε, metamorphousthe) points to a profound change from within by the work of the Word of God and the Holy Spirit

Change of mind means that reason and feelings are restored so that they are able to distinguish God's will, what is good, what is pleasing, and what is perfect. This is the process of spiritual metamorphosis that makes believers no longer live according to the mould of the world, but according to God's will.

Practical application for the congregation:

This constantly updated life is evident through consistent spiritual discipline: reading the Bible to form a divine mindset, praying to involve the Holy Spirit in decision-making, fasting to practice obedience to feelings, and faithfully worshipping to receive a healthy and constructive teaching.

The Right Life Will Bear Fruit Beyond

Strong roots always produce real fruit. The true spiritual life does not stop at personal transformation, but will be seen through service that has an impact for others.

The Righteous Life Produces Grace (Romans 12:6a)

Apostle Paul reminded that every believer has received a gift according to God's grace. These gifts are not given for personal gain, but to build the body of Christ. Paul mentions various gifts, such as prophesying, serving, teaching, advising, sharing, leading, and being generous. All of them have one clear emphasis, every gift must be carried out with the right attitude. Gifts without love, sincerity, and loyalty will only be an empty activity.

A true life is not only about a change of character, but also a willingness to serve. Spiritual Gift is the fruit of life that has been transformed, not a tool to exalt yourself.

Practical application for the congregation:

These gifts find their form in real ministry: in the pulpit, in church volunteering, in teaching and counselling services, in missions, church organisational structures, and cell groups. Through this service, the true life has an impact and becomes a blessing for many people.

The right life starts from a conscious decision to offer oneself to God and continues with a continuous renewal of mind. From this root, the fruit of service is born through the use of the gifts that God entrusted. Without the right root, there will be no true fruit; without change from the inside, there will be no real impact on the outside.

Therefore, a life of abundance can only be experienced when the congregation chooses not to be like the world, but to be changed by the Word and the Holy Spirit. A true life that is rooted inwards and bears fruit to the outside, that is a sign that a person really walks in God's good will, which is pleasing to Him, and perfect.
